Poll Shows 74 Percent of Germans Urge Pressure on Israel
(MENAFN) Nearly 75% of Germans want their government to intensify pressure on Israel regarding the worsening humanitarian disaster in the Gaza Strip, a recent Forsa poll commissioned by a magazine revealed on Tuesday.
According to the survey, 74% of participants expressed support for a tougher German federal government stance towards Israel amid its ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza.
The poll uncovered a significant political split: an overwhelming 94% of Left Party supporters and 88% of Green Party voters back increased pressure on Israel.
Among followers of the governing center-right Christian Democrats (CDU) and their Bavarian ally Christian Social Union (CSU), as well as the center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD), around 77% favor stronger German intervention to alleviate the humanitarian catastrophe and help end the conflict, which has raged since October 2023.
Opposition to heightened diplomatic pressure is most pronounced among the right-wing extremist Alternative for Germany (AfD) supporters, with 37% opposing increased measures.
Nonetheless, a majority of 61% of AfD voters still support a more assertive German policy on Israel.
Historically, Germany has been a steadfast ally of Israel, with its leaders continually stressing the nation’s moral duty rooted in the legacy of Nazi atrocities and the Holocaust.
Mass protests across Germany have erupted, with citizens rallying against what they deem Israeli war crimes in Gaza.
Under intensifying public demand, Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced Monday that the government is considering escalating pressure on Israel to address the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Since October 2023, Israel’s actions have resulted in over 60,000 deaths in the Gaza Strip. The ongoing Israeli blockade has triggered severe food shortages, causing fatalities from starvation.
The global hunger monitoring group Integrated Food Security Phase Classification issued a Tuesday alert warning that famine is "playing out" across the Gaza Strip.
