Turkey showcases its strongest non-nuclear aerial bomb at IDEF
An official involved in the project noted, “The R&D center has modified the explosive and filler design. Qualification and certification processes are complete and ready for use.” Alongside GAZAP, the same official provided details about another weapon, the NEB-2 Ghost, which also weighs 970 kilograms and is described as the “best bunker-buster in the field.”
This bunker-buster has superior penetration capabilities. “Normally, in nuclear power plants, US-made missiles penetrate 2.4 m (7.8 ft) of C35 (standard concrete). NEB-2 penetrates 7 meters of C50 (three times stronger concrete than in nuclear power plants),” the official explained. Like GAZAP, the NEB-2 can be released from an F-16 jet.
During testing, the NEB-2 was dropped on an island where it penetrated as deep as 90 meters (295 feet), triggering landslides, gas leaks, and rock fragmentation within a 160-meter (524 feet) diameter area. “The explosion, which normally takes 25 ms (milliseconds), was timed to 240 ms, making it more destructive,” the official added.
The current edition of IDEF, which is the 17th and spans six days starting on Tuesday, is being hosted simultaneously at several locations in Istanbul, including the Istanbul Fair Center, Ataturk Airport, WOW Hotel, and Atakoy Marina, as stated by reports.
